InHunt World is a Global Headhunting Network that is currently active in over 40 countries. During this autumn, we are going to go through these countries one by one, usually interviewing the Country Manager or the CEO of the country in question.

Today we are in Sweden, one of the countries that haven’t been too affected by the Pandemic. Each nation decided to go with a different strategy in order to slow down the pandemic and Sweden was initially criticized, but now the results are actually better than many others from neighboring countries. Also, home to the famous AstraZeneca pharma company, with its 10.4M inhabitants, Sweden managed to keep its unemployment rate relatively low, 10,3% (source).

Sweden’s economy will grow substantially faster than previously expected for 2021, the government said in June 2021. Gross domestic product is expected to expand 4.7% in 2021 against 3.2% growth predicted in the previous forecast, made in April, the government said in a statement. In 2022, the government expects economic growth to slow to 2.9% versus a previous forecast of 3.8% growth.

While the Swedish economy is healthy and it is often depicted as a ‘welfare state’, the country struggles to keep up with its labor market demand. Its labor market stress levels are characterized by a ‘skills mismatch, with more employers searching for highly skilled workers. Foreign professionals often face bureaucratic challenges when considering Sweden as a destination, and there is much political debate about improving the situation for international workers.

Headhunting and Recruitment Market in Sweden

The headhunting and recruitment market has been very active in Sweden since autumn 2020. There were some months between march and august in 2020 with fewer activity and after that, there has been a huge increase in recruitment activity in general, thanks to the high concentration of Pharma industries and Financial Investments.

In Sweden in 2020, the headhunting market size was under 113 million €, and there are almost 340 hundred companies that officially have headhunting services in their service portfolio. However, many of these companies are just run by one or two people. The biggest headhunting companies in Sweden have a turnover of between 12 and 19 M€ annually.

Next, we are going to interview the Manager and Recruitment Consultant of Level Recruitment, Mr. Christian Smith. Christian has been working at Level Recruitment since 2009. Christian will give his insights on how he sees the headhunting and recruitment market in Sweden.

How is everything Christian? Thank you for taking your time for this interview. First of all, how are you and how was the summer?

Thank you, the summer has been great. Sweden has had lovely weather and the business climate is constantly improving. It has been nice, with a relaxing break and now we and the candidates are back and ready for the autumn.

How would you comment on the first half of 2021?

The economy in Sweden has quickly picked up after the beginning of the pandemic. Because of that we can see a big demand for headhunting and search on the Swedish market.

Our cooperation with InHunt World started in 2021 and we can see the benefits of being part of an international and global network. From April we noticed a big improvement in the movement, in the candidate market. The candidates are more willing to listen to new professional challenges. But on the other side, there are more headhunters contacting them so we have to be quick and drive our processes forward.

How do you see the second part of 2021? And what about 2022?

We still see a big and growing demand in the Swedish market. Many companies have done well during the pandemic and now they are increasing their goals even more so we are looking forward to a good 2021 and hopefully a great 2022.

We are starting to see a shortage of available candidates in the market. So we are moving clearly towards a candidate’s market during autumn.

What are the industries that are hiring the most?

Within engineering, in Sweden, there are some competencies that are especially hard to find. But we also see the same within IT, Construction & Real Estate, as well as Finance. Sweden is focusing a lot on the new generation lithium batteries industry and that is driving the demand for specialized engineers.

Another key area is the infrastructure that the government has focused on during the pandemic.

What are the roles that companies are needing the most?

Generally, within Software Development and IT, but also engineers and competencies within the construction and real estate. Finance as well. Specialists are in high demand on the Swedish market. We see a big demand for competence in general during the fall.

What about the candidate market?

Sweden has a low unemployment rate and there has been a shortage of certain competencies even during the pandemic. Candidates often have multiple offers from different companies so it’s important to be a good and attractive employer.

Thank you for your time Christian!
