In this blog series, we are going to interview all our Partners and learn how the pandemic is affecting different countries around the globe.

Founded in 1998 by David Pike, Jefferson Maguire Executive Search employs 12 staff at three locations in the UK London Portsmouth and Edinburgh.

Last week, we had a chance to talk with David Pike, Managing Director, and we asked him a few questions:

First of all, how are you? We hope that you and your family have stayed healthy during this pandemic.

We have a large family in various locations across the UK, and we have all kept healthy and unaffected.

How’s the UK at the moment, or how has it been the last 6 – 7 months?

It seems we are going into a second wave, which is affecting the regions in a different way. The North of the country is the worst affected and new restrictions are being imposed at the moment. However, strong measures are also being imposed over the whole of the UK. One area is starting a 6-week lockdown in November.

And what about business and the general atmosphere? How the companies are holding up, have there been a lot of layoffs?

The atmosphere is not very upbeat. The furlough scheme has helped many companies to survive, but that ends soon. Online companies have done very well. Many well-known retailers are moving to online deliveries. Retail in general and the high street have been hit very hard, and some won’t recover.

How do you see the end of 2020? And what about 2021?

The last quarter is going to be hard for many companies, smaller businesses and themselves employed will be hit hard. The savior will be a vaccine that might be available 1st quarter next year but generally times will continue to be difficult. Working from home will continue to be the norm, which will, in turn, affect all those businesses like hairdressers and sandwich bars and cafes in cities that rely on office workers for their livelihood.

What do you think about the future? What is going to be the biggest difference in the UK if you compare the situation before the pandemic and the possible situation after?

The most significant difference is the growth of online companies and people working from home.

What kind of roles do you think companies are going to need the most after the pandemic? Do you think there’s some significant difference before and after COVID regarding recruitment and headhunting?

Companies will still need to employ top-quality people even more now to help them drive and grow their businesses. Because of the many more people looking for work, they will be bombarded with CVs, so to save all that workload, an exceptional candidate presented by an Executive Search firm should cut back on all that work sifting through hundreds of CVs.
